As local photographers at Monsters of Salem, clients often ask us when the “perfect” time for a portrait session is. While we love the moody atmosphere of a rainy afternoon or the crisp clarity of a winter morning, nothing quite compares to the transformative glow of Golden Hour.

What Makes Golden Hour So Special?
The main reason photographers obsess over Golden Hour is the quality of light. As the sun dips low on the horizon, light travels through more of the atmosphere, filtering out harsh blue tones and leaving behind a soft, warm, golden radiance.
Instead of the squint-inducing brightness of midday and deep brow shadows, you get a gentle, flattering light that softens skin tones and adds an ethereal quality to your portraits. It creates the kind of atmosphere that feels like stepping straight into a storybook.

Waterfront locations offer consistent light during the final hours of the day. While New England coastlines differ from West Coast ocean sunsets, evening rays reflecting off the water provide dramatic, timeless backdrops for portraits. Here are our top Salem coastal locations:
- Deadhorse Beach: Don’t get fooled by the name, this north-westerly facing beach looking across towards Beverly provides the longest sunsets around.
- Willows: This beautiful park offers lovely weeping willow trees, rocky outcroppings, a pier, and some sandy beaches. Not to mention the old fashion boardwalk arcade, food, and ice-cream.
- Derby Wharf: There’s something irresistible about sunset next to a lighthouse. Though, be warned, that lighthouse looks much closer than it actually is when you start walking towards it. It’s still worth every moment and plenty of beautiful spots along the way.
- Winter Island: Another chance for a lighthouse, one much closer to your car. Between the rocky beach and the lighthouse, this spot is perfect for a picnic or for grand dramatic ocean vistas. We truly think it’s Salem’s most romantic spot.
