Capture the Magic of Salem with Light Painting Portraits
Looking for a one-of-a-kind Salem memory?
When most people think about souvenirs from Salem, they imagine a witch hat, a spell book, or a quick phone photo in front of the Witch House.
But what if the memory you take home from Salem wasn’t just a photo?
What if it was a one-of-a-kind work of art created with light, movement, and a little bit of magic?
That’s exactly what we created at Monsters of Salem.
As local photographers who live right here in town, we wanted to design a photography experience that felt as unique as Salem itself. The result is something you simply can’t find anywhere else in town: Light Painting Portraits.
This experience was featured by Creative Collective in their Unique Experiences Series, highlighting it as one of the city’s most creative and immersive activities.

What Is Light Painting Photography?
Light painting photography turns the night into a canvas.
Using long exposures, handheld lights, and carefully timed flashes, we create glowing shapes, swirling energy, and dramatic color effects directly inside the camera. These portraits aren’t created with Photoshop tricks later. They’re crafted in real time while the photograph is being taken.
You might find yourself:
- Holding streams of glowing light
- Standing inside a halo of color
- Surrounded by swirling mystical energy
Every image becomes a collaborative work of art. As Aaron often explains to our clients, “The fun part is that it’s collaborative. You get to interact with the light and decide how you want to be part of the image. It’s not just a picture, it’s art.”
Some people want to look powerful and dramatic. Others lean into something whimsical, spooky, or playful. The entire experience is designed around the energy you want your portrait to have.
An Examples of a Light Wand Session:

An Experience You Can’t Find Anywhere Else
We began developing our light painting portrait sessions in 2022 and spent nearly two years refining techniques that would allow us to produce dramatic, cinematic images right in the streets of Salem.
The result is a portrait experience that feels immersive and theatrical, perfectly suited to the spirit of the city.
Sessions often take place near some of Salem’s most iconic historic locations, including Old Town Hall, or a nearby cemetery where the glow of lanterns and centuries-old architecture create the perfect stage for light and shadow.
And the best part? You don’t need any photography experience at all.
We guide you through every step of the process so you can focus on enjoying the moment while we handle the technical magic behind the camera.
Light painting portraits rely on very specific lighting conditions. Dusk and nighttime create the most dramatic results, which means our sessions are limited each evening.
In October, Salem’s busiest season with Haunted Happenings. These time slots tend to fill quickly as this lighting only happens twice a day! That makes a light painting session more than just a photo opportunity. It becomes a memorable experience to build part of your Salem trip around.
